Yah, I'm actually posting :). And yes, I did a few more than the 'required' ones, hadn't known about Durant or Leigh, and I just found some of the others interesting:

1605 - Gunpowder Plot: A plot led by Robert Catesby to blow up the English Houses of Parliament is thwarted when Sir Thomas Knyvet, a justice of the peace, finds Guy Fawkes in a cellar below the Parliament building. Fawkes was later hanged, drawn and quartered for his role in the conspiracy. (And this date is now a holiday in England where they have bonfires and burn Fawkes in effigy).

1872 - Women's suffrage: In defiance of the law, suffragist Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time, and is later fined $100.

1935 - Parker Brothers releases the board game Monopoly.

1990: Sept 1 – Oct 14. Attendance: 160,000. King & Queen: Stamberger & Atkins as Martin Godwin & Queen Verity. Improved children’s realm. Knighting Ceremony. Crows’ Nest. Martin English now ED. First year for the soup kitchen. First year for Bob the Incredible Juggler (?). Tortuga Twins.

1991: Aug 31 – Oct 13th. Attendance: 178,000. K&Q: ditto. Wharf stage, Canterbury Square, Jolly Rogers (first year?).

1992: Sept 5 – Oct 18. Attendance: 176,000. King & Queen: Stamberger & Atkins as Martin Godwin & Queen Verity. Special Events Pavillion (now the Chapel) built for Crown Jewels display. First year w/ Flush Privies! Rowangolightly was the poster child!

1993: Sept 4 – Oct 17. Attendance 149,796. (rainout on Sept 19, closed at 2:30 pm). King & Queen: Walter Ferguson & Karen Ellery as King William Windgold & Queen Valentine. Living History got started (?). Fikklebiches. Cindy Bryne General Manager.

Apologies to rougewench for doing 4 years at once but I have my reasons: 1990-93 were the four years that both D and I participated at faire with the SCA. We were the local Baron and Baroness during those years so it was, naturally, our priority. Cut for length ( Read more... )
