Costumers Meme
Oct. 19th, 2005 10:15 amGanged from Chernobylred, just had to do this one :).
1. What kind of things do you costume? Historical(to include SCA), rennfaire, Scifi/fantasy.
2. What was your first costume? That I made? Hard to remember, my mother had us sewing as soon as we could work the treadle on my great-grandmothers old machine. Plus there was always a large box of old clothes around the house to play dress-up with. Probably a witch or scarecrow. The first complete original costume I remember making was something fantasy for a ST con.
3. What's your favorite costuming movie? No way to pick just one here, to many genres. FavoriteS include; Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth, 3 Musketeers (the one from the 70's), All the LOTRs, several of the classic swashbucklers from the 1930's (Robin Hood, Zorro, Etc.), Dangerous Beauty, LA Confidential, Gone with the Wind, and on and on.
4. What's your favorite costuming movie dirty secret? (you know, the one that's not horribly accurate, or you're kinda embarrased that you saw it, but you love it anyway). As primarily a historical costumer, I get asked about costumes in historic movies a lot. A lot of them are not very accurate historically but that really doesn't bother my enjoyment of the movie as much as some folks seem to think it should. One thing I have learned from my theatrical experiences is that sometimes costuming needs to be more about telling the story, and adding to the visual part of the storytelling, than authenticity. So, surprise surprise, I actually can enjoy the costuming in a historic pic without it *having* to be completely authentic :). That being said, don't go claiming your movie is completely accurate if it is not (like Mel Gibson on the Tonight Show about Braveheart), then you are fair game for critical commentary.
5. If a huge alien ray destroyed all movies in the world, and they were remaking them all, which movie would you call dibs on to costume? Knight's Tale
6. Would you make the costumes the same or different? Different. For one thing, they would all look like they at least came from the same century!!!
7. Have you heard of the ICG? Yes.
8. If yes, are you a member? No.
9. If yes, why, if no, why not? Never had a reason to join.
10. How do you find other costumers or costume information sites? Referrals from the internet or google searches.
11. Where do you wear your costumes, or where are your costumes worn? Rennfaire, SCA, cons (at least a long time ago)
12. Is costuming your livelihood? Nope, and don't want it to be, then it would stop being fun.
13. How much formal training have you had in sewing/costuming? Is my mother's knee considered formal training? I have had a couple of classes here and there over the years, but most were on historic research, not construction.
14. How long have you been costuming? not counting the kid stuff, late 70's?

Date: 2005-10-19 04:41 pm (UTC)I kind of liked some of the costuming in Hamlet. Again, a mix of centuries but Gertrude's gowns were awesome, someone finally tried Anglo-Saxon. Wish I could have gotten some better pics of the trim.
