Geeky Friday
Aug. 29th, 2005 01:49 pmBusy busy weekend cut for length It started with a totally geeky friday. First part was getting my new flat screen monitor at work(I work for the state so we are sometimes a little slow on the tech curce :) ), which I setup myself. Small geeky victory (the actually setup), big physical victory (moved my cpu from the floor to the desk top for more leg room, which meant more leg room and was something I would not have been able to manage at this time last year) and now lots more space on my way-to-small desk surface with the big honkn' monitor out of the way. Then headed off to the Bruce Campbell signing that we had heard about from gammer_spinning.
Boy was this a trip down memory lane! Back to the days we had SF media cons here in KC and I still traveled to others around the midwest. DH couldnt make it, thanks to the KCRF media party (thank you gods for not raining on them again this year!) so I tagged another friend to go with me. CW also used to do some local cons so we both felt the waybackmachine hit as we pulled up to the small theater where the screening of BC's new film was to be and saw the LARGE crowd out front. Parking karma was with us and we found a spot right across the street that I was able to shovel, errrr, parallel park my rodeo into, then we joined the mob.
First reaction, later confirmed, was that the theater had not known what they were getting into. I will say this though, they got organized pretty fast and after the first too-many-people through to-few-doors it smoothed out. BC was supposed to start signing about 5 pm, he had just arrived when we got there, about 10 after 5. We found out pretty fast that the line we thought was a line wasn't, and found the line to get our number (they were handling the crowds in groups of 50) and then managed to find the fairly empty lounge with some nice comfy seats before the rest of the mob did. CW immediately started chatting up this nice older lady sitting near us when I spotted gammera_spinnings head above the crowd and he joined us. Had a nice visit with him until they finally called our group and we got to go stand in the *real* line, which took about an hour to wind it's way through the room. Time actually seemed to go pretty fast. Ran into another friend who is now working for IGN.com and was there to tape an interview w/ BC and then get footage of him introducing each screening (they had originally scheduled 2, then added a third, all sold out). KB confirmed the theater had not known what they were getting into but were enjoying the crowd. Then it turns out that the older woman CW had been chatting with was the mother of the owner and we heard all about how this theater had come to be, how the owner had lucked into the great vintage movie posters mounted on the walls (bought an old theater business office that was just going to 'throw the junk' out for him but he stopped them), and his plans for a Walt Disney museum. Between all that and trading various convention stories the time flew. Actually time 'with' BC was, of course, brief but the man is a pro. He had probably signed over 600 autographs by the time we came through but he was still pleasant, if brief. (He said you rennies should have skipped the media party and come to the movie :)). I think KB managed to get some film of us taking our turns at the table so we will see how that turned out. And all in all, for standing on my feet for over an hour, the joints were doing pretty good. Stiff and uncertain on the stairs as we left but I could never even have contemplated doing something like this last year. A nice stroll down geeky memory lane, thanks gammera_spinning :).
The rest of the weekend I was chained to the sewing machine! I have only one major ensemble to do for someone this year and it has been a real problem, but one I can only blame on myself; the fabric. It is for a working class/merchant costume and I had found this great woven cotton twill, in blue. Perfect for the character but the fabric has turned out to be waaaaaay more high maintenance than I had expected. And I hate high maintenance fabric! I had slowly been putting this project together, and had expected to get more done on it last week but between various small emergencies (cat to the vet) was not where I had wanted to be going into the last weekend before faire. Very reluctantly I decided to cancel on motherpockets dinner and dwimmerlakes B-day (sorry guys!) but I finally got on a roll and had to go with it. Hopefully, tonight, I will get the last of the main sewing done and will await the fitting with baited breath. <\lj-cut>
