Didn't get a chance to really post last week so I wanted to be sure and grab a few minutes today to remember the weekend. Cut for possible length Was a hectic weekend for us as it was DH's closing weekend for Fortinbras and I ended up having to go to Joplin to judge/teach for an SCA event.

The event in Joplin is one I have had to miss the last two years because of the hip so despite having to miss the Cyrano viewing party and Fortinbras last show, I was very glad to not have to miss it this year. I stayed in town friday night, just in case of a costume emergency at the play, then drove down, in the RAIN early saturday morning. Fortunately I had ended up with a rider so I did not have to do the drive alone. It was a little slow going through the construction areas but we got there in plenty of time.

The event is called the Queen's Prize Tourney and it is meant to be a place arts & science folk can display a piece/poject and get one-on-one feedback from judges (ie; someone with a little more experience in the field) but not have to face a strict counting of points. Entrants are sponsored by either POA's or GOA's and if you sponsor someone you also make/provide a small token that you then give to another entrant. Her Majesty does pick one overall entrant to receive Her 'prize' so yeah, one person 'wins' but all entrants get a pressie and, hopefully, positive feedback from the judges and the populace who are also circulating among the tables and may leave comments.

There were over 100 entrants this year and what I really enjoy about this event is getting to see all the great projects people have been reseraching and developing. A&S folks tend to spend a lot of time working on their projects alone, or in very small groups and if you miss an event something premiers at, or it is a big event with a lot going on, it may not be seen by very many folk. Competitions can also be intimidating to many, or competitions are just not their thing, so they don't enter. This year there were cooking entries, one of which was a meat pie with the crust layered on top to look like a Tudor rose, a sprange weaving loom, several absolutely gorgeous illumination pieces, beautiful forged iron doorknocker with a delicate stag's head and oak leaves, a large leather lyre case w/ carving, several large glass plates, a group of teenagers entered a dance and there were several bardic entries too. Someone has started to make a reproduction embroidery of the Bayeux tapestry and had it there to display, complete with the custom made box it will be rolled and stored in. I was not assigned to judge the brewing enteries (darn it :) ) but did 'judge' most of the embroidery entries. There was one ambitious lady who is covering both sleeves and the bodice of an Itlaian camisia w/ blackwork. Another hand pleated (as in pleating fine enough to do smockwork on) the body and both sleeves of a shirt. This was an example of one of those things you see so often in paintings and theorize and theorize about it, then seeing how someone has tried it triggers the old-lightbulb-moment. Another embroidery entry was a Russion icon picture done entirely in silk split stitch, just gorgeous. The recipient of the Queen's Prize was a woman who did a complete 15th century Burgundian ensemble from the skin out, all in linen and wool with a lot of hand stitching, she looked liked she had just stepped out of a painting, it was that perfect.

Did not try to drive back late saturday, getting to old for that :). My rider and I shared a hotel room and had a more pleasant drive back sunday morning. Got home late enough that we did not wake up DH, who had had a late night with the set strike for Fortinbras. This event was good timing for me as I am now completely finished with the costumes for Fortinbras and am now all inspired to dive into the next project. Well, ok, after I get that shirt done for costume seminar next week.....:)
