Back at work
Mar. 4th, 2005 11:18 amActually, I've been back at work fulltime since monday but it was to hectic to get this posted, then LJ was in read-only mode everytime I signed on, then I thought I would just save it for friday since they are always so slow for Louie_d :).
As may be concluded from the fact that I am back at work fulltime again, yup, the hip is all healed and I have been released to full-weight bearing. Yippee and virtual handsprings! As my doctor warned me, I will still need some help with walking as it can take 6 months - a year for all the muscles to heal completely, but it has been about 10 days since I got the go ahead and I feel I am making excellent progress. I went down to one crutch the first 4-5 days, using the cane in the house, now I am down to just the cane, and moving a lot faster than I have been able to in months! I can also manage short spurts around the house without the cane but I look like a drunken sailor, rolling from side to side :). I may always need the cane for support in some situations (like uneven ground) but it is soooooo nice to be able to take those extra steps now. Ok, let me cut the next bit for self indulgent health venting ; It's the little things that you don't realize you are loosing, but add up to your quality-of-life; getting in and out of the car without pain, being able to stand long enough at the sink in the morning to brush your teeth, and hair :), take a shower, cook at the stove, etc. Not having to plan your whole day, or week, around how many steps you have to take. Not swearing at the cat because going through the kitchen to check their foodbowls on the way out the door in the morning is just a few steps more than the other path to the door. Having to gauge every chair by how low it is, and will I be able to get up from it. Avoiding stairs like the plague, even one step up, or worse down, becoming something to avoid at all costs. Having the energy to be able to run a last minute errand on the way home. Shopping! All of the above didn't happen at once, it just kind of crept in over the course of 2 years. You find a way to manage part of it, or it gets a little better, so you don't think anything of it until you stop one day and, your life has changed.
Where to go from here; I reactivated my Ymca membership and am back doing water aerobics. Yoga will probably have to wait for my visit w/ rehab. There will always be some limitations to what I can do on/with the hip, at least if I want to avoid dislocating the new hip, (something I have been advised to avoid :)) and, unfortunately, I think they will impact yoga the most. Also need some exercises to strength the ankle on the leg with the new hip, it is, at this point, actually giving me more trouble than the hip as it seems to have gotten very lazy during it's recent 'vacation'. I am slowly working my way through the main floor of the house, sorting the piles that have built up over the last year. Hopefully sewing central will get moved back downstairs to the sweatshop in a week or so, I hope to get downstairs to sort those piles this weekend. I think I am gauging the increases in my activity pretty well so far. And I'm walking a little more everyday with few problems, mostly the ankle mentioned above and some stiffness after I have been sitting for awhile.
And last but not least, the 10 Things Thingy, since it has been running through my head for a week :)!
1. stood on top of Urqhurt castle on the shores of Loch Ness with the love of my life.
2. walked *down* all the steps in the Washington monument.
3. stood in the center of Stonehenge.
4. had Jimmy Doohan pillow his head on my right boob.
5. stepped *through* the Berlin Wall (this was a big symbol of the Cold War for me so when I had the opportunity while in Fulton, MO, several years ago, I took it)
6. watched Star Trek during it's original run on tv.
7. had dinner w/ the TV exec who fired Herve V. from Fantasy Island.
8. had my butt pinched in Paris. (probably not all that rare of an occurence if you live there :) )
9. had a pastlife experience at Hampton Court.
and definately last but not least;
10. have an artificial hip :).
