We Have Hardwood Floors!
Apr. 7th, 2008 10:08 amIt has been a marathon week+ of redecorating but the old ratty carpet (15+ years) came up sunday and Ta Da! The floor underneath was in better shape than I had hoped for. Details behind cut:
galactusprime and his brother spent the better part of sunday pulling up old carpet, then dealing with nails, tack strips and getting new quarter-round in place. They had to work in sections as we really didn't have anyhwere to move all the furniture that would get it all out of the room at once. It was a marathon job!
There were two spots I was worried about: the first was the area right in front of the front door. This had linoleum, instead of carept. We were very afraid they had just glued the linoleum down (the was a VA repo house) but as the old carpet came up
galactusprime spotted a board underneath and we had some hope. Sure enough, the linoleum was glued to the board, which had been nailed down. The wood is a little worn, with a few more holes than other spots, but in good shape.
The other spots I knew was going to be bad was right in front of the coat closet. This had been a favorite 'spot' for one of our cats to use before we realized she was going through kidney failure. No smell, but definately some staining. It is all right up close to the door so not as noticeable as it could have been.
We have a few nail holes to fill in but it is all still livable with, which is a good thing as it may be a year or two before we can get a pro to come in and sand/seal everything. The new carpets and paint are perfect however, the room doesn't look the same :). The place is still a mess however. We got a lot moved back in yesterday but still have pictures to hang and some knic-knacs to get back out. Then there is all the stuff sorted out for the garage sale.........
While
galactusprime and K were ripping carpet I was in the basement, working! I haven't gotten to the sewing machine yet but I sorted out almost half of the storage shelves and had a lot to add to the garage sale pile, which has gotten quite large! Tentative date is this saturday, if it doesn't rain. Come on by, there will be fabric, some crafty supplies, a vintage cedar chest, antique hump-backed trunk, chairs, vintage day bed, Singer sewing machine, etc., etc., etc.
Oh yeah, plus we had to have the plumber out on saturday. Fortunately it caught a small problem before it became a gusher. Ahhh, nothing like being a homeowner :)!
