Busy weekend
Apr. 21st, 2008 01:02 pmGot LOTS done:
First the TV saga from last week: Our BIG Sony (gift from my sister right before the hip operation so they could get a HUGE flat screen) died. Flickered on saturday night, deader than a doornail on sunday am. Checked around on line and while it might have been fixable it would have been $$$, not to mention the hassel of getting it in and out of the house to a repair shop (this will make more sense later). Checked around on prices and we headed out after work monday to see if we could pick one out. We stopped at the Sears Grand just up the street from us and quickly determined what size would work in the old cabinet. Narrowed it down to two models, talked with the sales clerk, just about decided on which one when she mentioned that they did not have either in stock. Huh! I had been ready to just get one of these at Sears and go home, it had been a long day but nope, wasn't going to happen. She did call around for us but apparently tuesday is delivery day and noone had any of this model. Fine! So we went to Best Buy, and next time we will be starting there. They had the exact same model we looked at at SG for $300 less, plus buyer protection was half the cost for twice as long. Much more informed salesclerk who recommended another model and that is what we got.
Now came the fun part; getting the old one out of the house. Fortunately the next day was large-trash-pick-up in our neighborhood so all we had to do was get it to the curb. Easier said than done. Did I mention the thing was HUGE? It was a sony Trinitron and probably weighed 100 pds. I'm not kidding! Plus, being an old tube-type set, the weight was not balanced well and it was not designed with good places to grip. GP would only let me spot for him so we got him down the one step to the porch and the two steps to the yard where he rushed it to the curb. Whew. New tv went together just fine and so easy to pop into the stand.
We are on a main drag so it has been amusing over the years to watch the traffic cruise the piles heaped on the curbs for LTPU. I was a little surprised the tv was still on the curb when I went to bed, not surprised it was gone by morning. Apparently it had not remained there all that long though. About 45 minutes after I went to bed GP heard something in the driveway and looked out the window to check on it; there were 3 teenaged kids standing around our trash bin (it's also trash day), no sign of the tv. One of the kids was in shorts and a t-shirt and I don't think had shoes. They weren't really doing anything but it was kind of late at night so he kept an eye on them. A little while later here comes a jeep to pick the up, and the tv. Apparently they had moved it over by the trash bin (and off the curb) and the other kids stayed to guard it while a larger vehicle was aquired. It took at least 3 of them to get it into the jeep :). If they know a way to get it working more power to them, they earned it :).
The weather finally cooperated and we had the garage sale on saturday. It was cold and damp in the am which may have kept the early birders home. I know it kept me huddled in my chair under two blankets. Did manage to get rid of some things, especially two of the larger items so only a couple of things went back in the house and a SUV load went to the thrift store on sunday. It was especially nice to get the mountain of 'stuff' out of the living room, reallly felt like we could start to enjoy the new decor.
Sunday was time for tidying up and starting to spring clean. Found the dining room table! Well, I had always known it was there but now it is under only 1-2 layers as opposed to 3-4 :). A teenaged friend came over to help with some of the lower level cleaning its hard for me to do and it feels like a really good start. More to finish up this week to be prepped for WW this weekend. I am sooooo ready for massages on our back deck!
Oh yeah, and I think a turkey vulture is nesting in a big hollow branch of the silver maple in the back yard :).
