Plotting a project
Aug. 14th, 2008 01:19 pmI have a couple of fabric projects in the works right now, altho you would not know it to look at the sweatshop (the nickname for my sewing room). Right now most of it is in my head.
I first noticed this habit when building GP's costumes for his roles at faire. As I think I have mentioned before, I love to research! I could happily putter around in books, and now on the internet, cruising the pics and info for hours. Then I begin to put the pieces together in my head. I would start some of the shopping for fabric and trim, but keep working it out in my head.
New patterns were always tested with mockups first, sometimes well before the actual build. When enough pieces and parts were together in my head I would start. Now, it is still very easy for me to get distracted with new research or fabric possibilites so at this point it was always good to have a deadline by which the project had to be finished :). And just because it felt 'ready' mentally did not mean everything always went smoothly either but looking back I think I usually spent as much researching and planning as I did sewing. And to be honest, I probably enjoyed the first part the most :).
So all this talk of costume needs a pretty picture. The first H8 outfit I made for GP, and I have learned soooo much since then, but it is still one of my favorites:

And now to work :)!
