Not a good start to the morning.....
Aug. 22nd, 2008 09:48 amSo I get to work and the monitor wouldn't come on, again. Cut cause I'm venting and it may get long... Message: no digital input. This had started about 10 days ago. First time I checked the cables, no luck, so I called the help desk. They said take the cable out, put it back again. Ok, it worked. So when it happened again I tried the cables, no luck, switched the ends around, aHa!, Worked! Couple of days later, happened again, jiggle/check/switch cables around, monitor finally works, not sure what I did but, hey, it was working.
So again this morning, same message. Try the cable route, still no luck. Since messing with the cable seemed to have fixed it previously, start looking for another cable and go on a learning curve: Apparently my monitor is one of only two in the department that use a digital-type cable. This was determined after over half an hour of checking other monitors to find a cable to switch out, then a monitor to switch out. I can plug these things in, don't ask me to tell you what they do. By the time I determined there was only one other possibility for a cable match, that co-worker had arrived so I decided not to 'borrow' it :).
Finally gave in and called the tech support for our department, got an explaination on the cables and he came over with another matching one. Still had problems so he finally had to go into the unit itself and extract the video card. Got it to work after that with just a little cable tweaking. So finally, after an hour and a half, I'm online. Yippeee!!!
As I may have mentioned before, I get my geek points through SF and ST, not computers :). Our tech did compliment me however and said I did more than about 90% of the other folks on campus would have done before calling him for help. Good to know I was at least giving it the old college try :)
